The Battle of Britain Airshow is an annual aviation event commemorating the 1940 RAF air campaign that defeated the German Luftwaffe. In 2026, there are 3 major Battle of Britain airshows across England, held between June and September. Each event features historic warbirds, flying displays, and re-enactments from the Second World War era.

For official aviation safety context, see the UK Civil Aviation Authority. For the previous guide in this series, see Old Buckenham Airshow 2026: Dates, Aircraft Lineup, Tickets, and 6 Essential Facts.

What Is the Battle of Britain Airshow?

The Battle of Britain Airshow is a commemorative aviation event honouring the RAF’s victory over the Luftwaffe between July and October 1940. The Battle of Britain was the first battle in history fought exclusively in the air. Britain’s 2,900 RAF pilots carried on against Germany’s attempt to force a surrender, ultimately defeating the Luftwaffe and compelling Hitler to abandon his invasion plans.

Airshows dedicated to this campaign bring historic aircraft back into the skies above England, including Spitfires, Hurricanes, and Lancasters — the same aircraft types that defended British airspace over 80 years ago.

What Is the Duxford Battle of Britain Airshow 2026?

The Duxford Battle of Britain Airshow takes place on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September 2026 at IWM Duxford, Cambridgeshire. The 2026 event marks 90 years since the first flight of the Spitfire prototype, making it a special edition centred on this iconic aircraft.

Set at IWM Duxford in Cambridgeshire, the Duxford Battle of Britain Airshow is one of Britain’s most atmospheric historic aviation events, bringing together classic warbirds, vintage fighters, and living history to evoke the era of 1940. The two-day show blends spirited flying, heritage aircraft, and immersive ground displays that highlight the people and machines of the Second World War.

What Aircraft Will Fly at Duxford 2026?

Spitfires, Hurricanes, and more will soar overhead at the 2026 Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show. The 2025 event welcomed some of the only airworthy examples of historic aircraft, such as the B-17, Avro Anson, and rare warbirds from around the world.

How Much Are Duxford Battle of Britain Airshow Tickets?

Kids go free to the Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show with every Standard Adult booking. Members receive 10% off Standard tickets and other exclusive benefits. Special Gold Experience tickets are also available. Tickets must be booked in advance — there are no tickets available on the day, either online or at the gate.

The 2026 Battle of Britain Airshow at Headcorn Aerodrome is held on 27th–28th June 2026. It is the 11th event, blending choreographed Battle of Britain-era aircraft displays with family-friendly attractions and re-enactments. The show takes place in the very airspace where the Battle of Britain occurred over 80 years ago.

Fighters, bombers, transport, and training aircraft share the Kent skies at the event — both allied and axis types. Ticket options include the Spitfire Enclosure, Flight Line Premier tickets, and two-day passes.

What Is the Aero Legends Battle of Britain Airshow 2026?

The 2026 Aero Legends Battle of Britain Air Show takes place at RAF Woodchurch (Ashford) on 8th–9th August 2026. Woodchurch has a strong aviation heritage and provides a new setting for the event. The Aero Legends team brings over a decade of experience from previous successful shows to this new venue.

On both Saturday 8th August and Sunday 9th August, gates open at 10:00, with the full agenda of spectacular flying displays starting from 13:00. Pre-sale tickets are required; no tickets are sold at the gate.

What Was the Battle of Britain? A Brief History

Why Did the Battle of Britain Start?

The Battle of Britain was a pivotal air campaign that took place between July and October 1940. The battle followed the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk and the Fall of France, as Germany made plans to gain air supremacy in preparation for an invasion of Britain.

How Many Aircraft Were Used in the Battle of Britain?

At the height of the Battle of Britain, the RAF had only 749 fighter aircraft available, against 2,550 Luftwaffe aircraft.

    The Luftwaffe’s total strength was 4,074 available aircraft, including 1,107 single-seat fighters, 357 two-seat fighters, 1,380 medium bombers, 428 dive-bombers, 569 reconnaissance, and 233 coastal aircraft.

The RAF’s 2,945 aircrew were joined by volunteers from 13 different nations, some of whom had battle experience against the Luftwaffe in their own air forces. This international force became known as “The Few.”

What Were the Losses in the Battle of Britain?

In total, the Allies lost 1,547 aircraft and suffered 966 casualties, including 522 deaths. The Axis casualties included 1,887 aircraft and 4,303 aircrew, of whom 3,336 died.

Which Aircraft Defended Britain in 1940?

There were 4 primary RAF fighter types used during the Battle of Britain. These include:

    • Hawker Hurricane — the most numerous fighter; took down more German aircraft than any other type
    • Supermarine Spitfire — the most recognisable symbol of British defiance
    • Boulton Paul Defiant — turret-armed fighter used in limited roles
    • Bristol Blenheim — twin-engine fighter and light bomber

The most famous fighter aircraft used in the Battle of Britain were the British Hawker Hurricane and the German Messerschmitt Bf 109 E variant single-engine fighters.

What Is the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF)?

The BBMF fleet includes 5 Spitfires, 2 Hurricanes, a Dakota, the world-famous Lancaster bomber, and 2 Chipmunk training aircraft. Flown by regular and reserve RAF aircrew, the aircraft can be seen across the UK from May to September at major airshows, commemorations, and state occasions.

The BBMF is typically tasked to fly at around 700 events of all shapes and sizes during each display season.

Where Is the BBMF Displaying in 2026?

The BBMF is confirmed to appear at multiple major 2026 airshows. These include:

    • Midlands Air Festival, Ragley Hall, Warwickshire
    • English Riviera Airshow, Paignton, Devon
    • RAF Cosford Airshow — 14 June 2026
    • Clacton Airshow — 27–28 August 2026

The Clacton Airshow appearance is particularly significant, as 2026 marks 90 years since the Spitfire’s first flight in 1936. The aircraft first flew and became one of the most recognisable and enduring symbols of British aviation.

Why Is 2026 a Special Year for Battle of Britain Airshows?

2026 marks the 90th anniversary of the Spitfire’s maiden flight, giving every Battle of Britain airshow added significance this year. The Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show specifically celebrates this milestone, set within the historic grounds and airfield where the Spitfire first flew.

There are 4 reasons 2026 is a standout year for Battle of Britain aviation events:

    1. The Spitfire celebrates its 90th anniversary of first flight
    2. 3 major dedicated airshows run across England from June to September
    3. The BBMF returns to Cosford, Duxford, and Clacton with the full historic fleet
    4. The Duxford show features a special 90th anniversary Spitfire coin

How Do You Buy Tickets for Battle of Britain Airshows?

All 3 Battle of Britain airshows in 2026 require advance ticket purchase only. No tickets are sold at any gate on the day. Key booking details:

    • Headcorn: Tickets at headcornevents.co.uk
    • Aero Legends Woodchurch: Tickets at bobairshow.co.uk
    • Duxford IWM: Tickets at iwm.org.uk/airshows

The Battle of Britain airshows in 2026 collectively offer the most comprehensive celebration of RAF heritage in a single year. With 3 dedicated events, the 90th anniversary of the Spitfire, and the BBMF performing across the country, 2026 is the most significant year in recent history to attend a Battle of Britain airshow.

    About Us

Redhill Airshow is an annual aviation event held at Redhill Aerodrome, Surrey, every August. What started as a small vintage fly-in has grown into one of the most charming days on the airshow calendar — warbirds, aerobatics, an aerojumble, and a very British garden party atmosphere, all on one of England's finest grass airfields. No big stages. No distance between you and the aircraft. Just aviation the way it was always meant to feel.
